Social Media Networks Contribute to Detroit, Michigan’s Transformation

Social media is changing the way we live, work, and play. Our networks are larger, our interests broader, and our opportunities more abundant than ever before. Thanks to this dynamic, digital infrastructure, Detroit, Michigan is making a comeback and gaining esteem as a city of possibility.

The new direction is small and sustainable. There is a lot of risk involved, but Detroiters are banding together though partnerships and social networks. Within this urban laboratory, the dialogue is overwhelmingly positive. There’s a reason Facebook only has a “like” button.

Detroit Design Festival 2011

Detroit has been a host to fashion shows, gallery openings, markets, happy hours, urban design lectures, flash mobs, volunteer opportunities, and music festivals. These small scale projects depend on local sponsorship, media support, and free internet marketing opportunities.

First there are Facebook invites, next the Twitter updates, the FourSquare check-ins, and the Vimeo uploads. With any luck, thanks to the QR code on your business card, you’ll walk away from the event with a few new LinkedIn connections. Soon UpTo, a new social media platform developed by a Detroit-based tech start-up, will enable users to share intent-based information in addition to present or past happenings.

Next Big Thing Detroit 2011

In Detroit, Model D, I am Young Detroit, Dig Downtown, Detroit LIVES!, and Huffington Post Detroit provide outstanding social media outlets for promotion. While Detroit Venture Partners, Hatch Detroit, Quicken Loans, and the Knight Foundation offer financial support, connections, and resources for innovators and entrepreneurs. Initiatives launched by LiveWorkDetroit! and Challenge Detroit are encouraging young professionals to move to Detroit and become part of this social revolution.

Recently, a group of entrepreneurs and social media specialists got together to create Urban Innovation Exchange (UIX). It’s all about linking the “idea people” with the necessary resources for a successful venture, as well as sharing stories of risk and rewards.

Alexandria Stankovich graduated from The University of Michigan with a B.S. in Architecture. In order to gain an authentic understanding of the urban context through the lens of education, she became a Denver, Colorado corps member with Teach for America, teaching elementary Special Education. Returning to metro-Detroit, Michigan, Alexandria writes about the innovative design projects and urban programs taking place in the Motor City. Fueled by her passions for the triple bottom line - environment, economy, and social equity – Alexandria is now working on her Masters in Urban & Regional Planning.
