A Shift in Urbanization: A How to Guide to Take a Step in the Right Direction

Growing up in a city your whole life, you definitely gain perspective on how it has grown and expanded throughout the years. I have been able to see the city of Lincoln, Nebraska develop and grow immensely in my time here, and not until my time at Global Site Plans did l really stop and think about the shift in urbanization that has occurred over the years.

Throughout the last several of years, sustainable urban planning has evolved into a concept that has grown to be a vital aspect in the development of urban landscapes. One major question remains however, how do we deal with the neighborhoods and suburbs that have become notorious for being environmentally unfriendly? I have seen how the city of Lincoln has been working to change this stigma and has widely accepted a modern mindset towards sustainability.

Lincoln has modernized the community through many different initiatives and projects that have guided the city in the right direction. Lincoln has expanded and developed while still maintaining strong parks, bike trails, and green spaces. This has highlighted how a city can create sustainable areas amidst a growing city. This development is encouraging to see as it can be seen that Lincoln is expanding in an environmentally responsible manner.

The infrastructure in Lincoln has changed in its progression of urban planning as well. Developing neighborhoods have greatly encompassed building with sustainable concepts in place. In the downtown area, mixed-use buildings are becoming commonplace and numerous revitalization projects have been developed. Floodplains, brownfield sites, and underdeveloped land have become revitalized. These revitalization projects have proven that Lincoln has been able to urbanize in a smart, efficient, and in an environmentally responsible manner.

Lincoln Growth

The growth of Lincoln has truly shifted in the right direction and essential shifts in urban planning have been advantageous on both an environmental and social scale. Since living in Lincoln, I have been able to experience the benefits of this urban planning and have seen how urban planning is becoming increasingly more progressive, while still maintaining basic principles of urbanization. This progressive mindset can only help to aid in solving environmental issues within our global community. The steps that Lincoln is taking are a great investment towards a better future and a growing trend in smarter urban planning design and ideals.

In what ways do you see your community following suit and shifting its urbanization tactics towards a more progressive and environmentally friendly future?
